METALLIC KUSUDAMA

After completing various projects related to installations and a large aluminum folded piece, in 2022, my friends and I made the collective decision to establish an art collective called RNKOLEKTIVE. The primary objective was to embark on the creation of a comprehensive series of large-scale sculptural pieces.

From May 18th to September 1st, we showcased the “METALLIC KUSUDAMA” exhibition at the Media Lab, thanks to the funding from the Council for the Arts at MIT, and to the Media Lab and CBA support.

Origami is a strict constrained kinematic transformation. It is a language that enables the encoding of three-dimensional information within a two-dimensional domain, unleashing a world where paper becomes a canvas for spatial exploration and creativity. Kirigami gives us the freedom to not only fold but cut. Within the tapestry of Kirigami lies Kusudama. Here, unique modules folded, cut, and assembled, converge to form larger pieces. While conventional folding relies on paper, we asked the question of what would it take to increase one order of magnitude in size a Kusudama. By using aluminum as medium, we show in this exhibition 3 large-scale pieces, all of them following a different folding nature. Straight, discretized, and curved creases are shown on each piece.

The project building process was a blast.
